Soldiers pitch in to build eco-gym for servicemen
Andy Martin and volunteers relax after their work An eco-gym for injured servicemen is close to completion after the Territorial Army lent a helping hand. The gym, in Woodside Rural Care Farm, outside Cambridge, is designed to help ex-servicemen and women return to fitness and support them in civilian life. It has been built entirely from recycled and natural materials, which have a minimal impact on the environment. A TA team from 151 Transport Regiment, The Royal Logistic Corps in London helped the project by delivering six tonnes of artificial turf to the six-acre site in South Road, Great Abington. In December, members of 32 Engineer Regiment visited the gym to build obstacles and erect gym equipment.
The project, known as Operation Warriors Return, involves both able and ex-service personnel in fundraising, designing and constructing the outdoor gym and assault course. Plans are also in place for volunteers to work alongside, and inspire, disaffected young people in Cambridgeshire who may have difficulties at school and with the authorities.
Paul Robert Martin, an experienced engineer, is the project director and a TA soldier with the Honourable Artillery Company. He said: “It is great to see the eco-gym coming together and we hope that it will be finished by the summer. Importantly, we hope that by acting as mentors and role models the ex-servicemen will encourage and inspire the disaffected youngsters working alongside them to succeed.” The eco-gym is a registered member of the National Care Farm Initiative that promotes rehabilitation through farming activities and the application of animal and horticultural therapy.
